How to write a good cover letter

Writing a good cover letter can help you stand out from the crowd, here are some top tips.

Do not repeat your CV

Many people tend to write out the points made in their CV in paragraph form when it comes to writing a cover letter. You should avoid doing this and instead write passionately about your interest in the type of job you are applying for with references to what you have done in your past that would make you a good candidate for the job role. Try to bring out your personality in the cover letter by talking about how the sector interests you and why you feel this opportunity would be right for you. Try and subtly show off your expertise in the industry!

Keep it short

Recruiters have a lot applications to review, do not write an essay as they most likely won’t read it. Keep your cover letter short and sweet, half an A4 page of text should be fine.

Don’t write too much

CV’s are designed to give employers a quick and clear overview of the potential candidates skills and experience. Typically you would not write more than two A4 pages for fear of waffling and putting the employer off. The aim of your CV should be to give the employer a teaser style summary of how great you would be for the job so that they invite you for an interview.

When it’s done, read through and spell check!

Once you have finished the cover letter ensure you take the time to read it through or have someone else read it. The cover letter should read well, be clear and to the point with no spelling mistakes.

Say when you can start work

You need to tell your potential employer when you are able to start the job position. It can make all the difference if you can be flexible with start dates and you may beat someone to the job if you are able to start on their preferred date.

Tell the recruiter where you found the job advert

Large organisations may have many vacancies at one time, it’s important to be clear which job you are applying for and where you saw it (Hopefully on this site!), as this will help the employer validate your application.
